HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-In-One Printer for Better Printing Experience

hp officejet pro 8600 printer

The history of Hewlett-Packard printers dates back to 1939. The company was founded in a garage in Palo Alto, California with less than $1000 in capital.

Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard were good friends. They met when they were classmates at Stanford University. Each founder completed a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1935.

Although Bill and Dave knew they wanted to work together, they did not have a business plan in place. They tried their hand at several different ventures such as a bowling alley foul-line indicator, a device to make a urinal flush automatically, a clock drive for a telescope, and a shock machine designed to help people lose weight.

Their first acquisition was a company producing high-quality graphic recorders, which laid the foundation for HP’s future printing business.

It wasn’t until 1991, when HP released an affordable, revolutionary color printer: the HP DeskJet 500C.

Today, printers are computers in their own right. They print, save copies, fax, email, scan, and the list of capabilities goes on.

What to Consider When Buying a Printer

If you own a small businesses or are the family gadget guru, you know that shopping for a new printer is somewhat mind-numbing.

There are so many makes and models that they all begin to look all the same.

Going into a printer purchase knowing what you want and what you need will help you avoid unneeded expenses and hampered productivity.

Before we get into the best features of the HP Officejet Pro 8600, take note of these capabilities and features to consider when making your printer choice.

Inkjet vs. Laser

There isn’t much of a machine price difference, but inject printers are known to be less expensive to operate than laser printers. However, much of that depends on how efficiently the printer uses the ink.

Functionality

Do you want a simple printer and photocopier, or do you want an all-in-one printer where you can scan, fax, print and photocopy?  The more functions a printer can do, the more productive it can be. However, more components can mean more breakdowns and longer set-up times.

Print Speed

This is a very important factor for anyone purchasing a printer for office use. If you expect many users to be printing from the same printer, speed is a big aspect to consider.

Connectivity

Being able to print from anywhere and from multiple devices is a must-have feature for an office. Also, the ability to share scanned documents and photos directly from the printer is a big boost to productivity.

Image Quality

We cannot stress enough about how much image quality plays a part of overall product satisfaction. Think about what your needs are when printing images. Are you a design company that needs to print high quality images to share for review? Does your family like to print lots of pictures for scrapbooking?

Mixed Reviews on Amazon

The HP Officejet Pro 8600 gets mostly positive feedback from Amazon customers who have had the chance to put this product to the test. We think it is important to read what real people who are using the product in real situations have to say about performance and reliability.

Bob Newhart gave the 8600 a 5-star rating. He had this to say: “I can't believe what a great printer you can get now for $140. This was rated in the top 10 by PcWorld, which is one of the reasons I got it. It sets up very easy, although it takes about 1/2 an hour. I had no problems at all getting it to print or scan right off the start. It’s impressive that black printer cartridges costing less than $40 will last for 2500 pages. It's important to figure in the cost of the cartridges when buying a printer. This is the 1st printer I've had that could be connected via Wi-Fi, and it was a breeze to get going and worked great. It is a bit bulky compared to previous printers I've had, but I wanted something that works well like this one. So, it's worth it and works fine. I've only had this a week, now, and will change my review if I have problems, but you know it's hard to go wrong at this price. I'm really thrilled with this printer so far, and especially at this price. It's not too surprising, I guess, since this is the 1st new printer I've had in 2 or 3 years.

Laurie from Cleveland, who also gave the 8600 5 stars, wrote, “I've had this for over a month, and had a large flow of orders over the month, and have put this printer through a lot. I've had no problems at all.

Laurie goes on to say, “This is a really great price for a great printer. It's perfect for both business and pleasure. The quality of printing is high, and I like how it recognizes the size of paper…so you don't accidentally print on photo paper your daughter left in the printer.

Old Guy, a tax preparer, provided some valuable criticism in his 3-star review.  He states, “I bought this printer because I am a tax preparer and go thru reams of paper and tons of ink during tax season. This printer was advertised as being the most economical in regard to ink usage. It is as advertised. In fact, it is noticeably so compared to my last printer. Otherwise, it is a rather plodding, ordinary printer with limited scan capabilities.

A 3-star rating came from Jeff Davison who had some concerns as well: “Getting [the] unit setup on LAN requires you to reconfigure printer's LAN settings to STATIC IP, and in order to get [the] unit to work on static IP you must configure your router (not a process for a novice) to get required downloads to allow printer to fully function. Getting [the] unit back online after it goes into energy save mode takes 45 to 60 seconds (no quick print or copy). HP customer service never responded to email requests. Also, when in energy saving mode, computer alerts scan function [is] disabled. Once the unit decides to work, the apps do appear to function. Print quality is good. [The] print from smartphone app works — email to printer has been hit or miss.

Finally, Amy Monique says, “I purchased this printer because it was wireless and a HP. I am please with it so far. It is noisier than I expected. It was also hard getting it connected to my network. I would select mine, and the printer kept selecting neighbors. The other thing I didn't like: I don't have a land line, and it would not let me bypass the fax section setting up. I ended up just putting my cell number in to proceed.” She gave the Hp Officejet Pro 4 stars.
